Your First Time at a Med Spa: A Beginner’s Guide From The Rae Clinic in Evans & Augusta, Georgia
So you’ve been thinking about it. Maybe you’ve noticed a few fine lines that weren’t there last year. Maybe a friend came back from her appointment glowing, and you couldn’t stop staring. Maybe you’ve been doom-scrolling before and after photos at midnight and thinking… okay, I think I’m ready.
Whatever brought you here, welcome. You’re in the right place.
The idea of walking into a med spa for the first time can feel intimidating, especially when you’re not sure what to ask for, what to expect, or whether any of it is actually right for you. That’s exactly why we wrote this guide.
At The Rae Clinic in Evans, Georgia, first-timers are our favorite people to work with. There’s nothing quite like watching someone walk out of their first appointment feeling more like themselves than they have in years. And it all starts with knowing what you’re walking into.
What Exactly Is a Med Spa & How Is It Different From a Regular Spa?
Great question, and one we get all the time.
A medical spa, or med spa, sits somewhere between a traditional day spa and a medical clinic. Unlike a regular spa that offers massages and facials, a med spa is staffed by licensed medical professionals, including nurse practitioners, physicians, or registered nurses who are qualified to perform medical-grade treatments that deliver real, clinical results.
At The Rae Clinic, every treatment is performed or supervised by one of our credentialed providers: Rebecca Williford, DNP-BC, Taylor Safford, NP, or Trang Nguyen, NP. That medical background is what separates a med spa experience from anything you’d find at a nail salon or day spa, and it’s what makes the results so dramatically different.
What Treatments Are Available at a Med Spa?
This is where it gets exciting because the menu is wider than most first-timers expect.
At The Rae Clinic, we offer two categories of services:
Natural-Looking Aesthetic Treatments: These are treatments designed to subtly enhance your appearance in a way that looks natural and like you. Our aesthetic menu includes neurotoxins like Botox, Dysport, Jeuveau, and Daxxify for fine lines and wrinkles; dermal fillers for volume and contouring; microneedling and PRP for skin texture and radiance; laser treatments for pigmentation, hair removal, and resurfacing; and Kybella for double-chin reduction.
Wellness Concierge Services:Treatments designed to make you feel as good as you look, from the inside out. Our wellness menu includes IV drips, peptide protocols, medical weight-loss programs, B12 injections, and concierge membership tiers that give you priority access to your provider month after month.
Not sure where to start? That’s what consultations are for, and we’ll get to that in a minute.
Do I Need a Consultation Before My First Appointment?
Yes, and honestly, you’ll be glad you did.
At The Rae Clinic, all new patients are required to complete a one-hour consultation before their first treatment. The consultation fee is $50 and is applied directly toward your first service, so it’s really an investment, not an extra cost.
During your consultation, your provider will:
Review your health history and any medications or supplements you’re taking
Listen to your goals and concerns without judgment
Assess your anatomy and skin to understand what’s actually going on
Recommend a personalized treatment plan based on what’s right for you and not what’s trending on TikTok.
Answer every question you have, no matter how small or silly you think it is
Think of the consultation as your roadmap. You’ll leave knowing exactly which treatments make sense for your goals, what to expect from each, and what your timeline and investment might look like. No pressure, no obligation, just really good information from someone who genuinely wants to help.
What Should I Ask During My Consultation?
Walking in with a few questions ready makes a huge difference, especially if this is your first time. Here are some great ones to start with:
What treatment would you recommend for my specific concern? Your provider will always give you an honest answer based on your anatomy, not what’s most expensive or most popular.
What results can I realistically expect? Managing expectations is part of great patient care. A good provider will always give you an honest picture of what’s achievable.
How long will the results last? Every treatment has a different longevity. Botox typically lasts 3-4 months, while some fillers can last 12-18 months. Knowing this upfront helps you plan.
What is the downtime like? Some treatments have minimal downtime, while others may involve redness, swelling, or bruising for a few days. Your provider will always walk you through what to expect post-treatment.
Can I combine treatments? Many patients combine multiple treatments in a single appointment, and your provider can tell you which combinations are safe and effective for your goals.
What should I avoid before and after my treatment? Pre and post-care instructions vary by treatment. Your provider will send you detailed instructions ahead of your appointment so you’re fully prepared.
Will it hurt?
Honest answer: It depends on the treatment, but most patients are pleasantly surprised by how manageable it is.
Neurotoxin injections like Botox feel like a quick pinch, and most patients barely notice them. Dermal fillers involve a bit more sensation, but most filler products contain lidocaine (a local anesthetic) that numbs the area as the product is injected. Microneedling involves some mild discomfort, and a topical numbing cream is applied beforehand to keep you comfortable. Laser treatments vary depending on the type and area being treated.
The bottom line? Our providers are trained to make every treatment as comfortable as possible, and they’ll always check in with you throughout your appointment. You’re never just left in a chair, wondering what’s happening.
How Do I Know Which Treatment Is Right For Me?
This is the question we love most because the answer is always the same: your consultation will tell you.
What we will say is this: the best treatment for you is the one that addresses your specific concern, fits your lifestyle and budget, and delivers results that make you feel like yourself, just better. It’s not always the most expensive treatment, and it’s not always what your best friend got. It’s what your provider recommends after reviewing your face, health history, and goals.
At The Rae Clinic, we never upsell. We never pressure. And we never recommend something that isn’t right for you, even if it means telling you you don’t need as much as you think. That kind of honesty is rare in this industry. We think it’s the only way to do business.
What Should I Do to Prepare For My First Appointment?
Once you’ve booked your consultation, here are a few things to keep in mind:
In the 24-48 hours before any injectable treatment, avoid alcohol, blood thinners, Vitamin E, fish oil, and Tylenol unless directed by your physician, since these can increase bruising and affect your results.
Come to your appointment with a clean face, meaning no makeup if possible, especially for skin treatments.
Bring a list of any medications or supplements you’re currently taking so your provider has the full picture.
Come with photos if you have them, whether it’s a treatment you’ve seen and love or a before photo of yourself that helps illustrate your concern. Visual references are incredibly helpful during consultations.
Most importantly, come with an open mind and zero pressure on yourself. Your first appointment is just a conversation. You don’t have to commit to anything until you’re ready.
